What fire looks like north of the city
Shoreline, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds are 1950s through 1980s ramblers and split-levels with attached garages, and garage fires, from cars, chargers, chemicals and dryers, are the signature loss: fast, hot, full of plastics and rubber that produce wet smoke, and connected to the house through a door and a shared attic. Fireplaces and wood stoves in the older houses add chimney fires in the first cold weeks. Mill Creek's condo complexes and Everett's older neighborhoods produce multi-unit smoke claims and Craftsman-era losses respectively.
Garage fires
The wet smoke from burning vehicles, tires, plastics and stored chemicals is sticky and pungent, penetrates everything, and travels through the attic into every room. Garage fire cleanups are whole-house jobs with heavy attic insulation removal.
When you call
The dispatcher confirms release and utilities, routes a board-up crew the same night and the assessment crew the next morning, and tells you the contractor's name and L&I registration number before arrival.
